Technique is looking for a Machinist to join our team at our Jackson, Michigan facility. This position reports to the Tooling Manager in the Machining department. The Machinist will produce precision machined parts by operating, setting up, and programming HAAS CNC mills & lathes, Flow Waterjet, and Mitsubishi Wire EDM using Mastercam, FlowPath, FlowCut & FlowXpert for the prototype industry. This role requires safe work practices, flexibility in work schedule, and a willingness to work overtime as needed.
The ideal candidate brings two or more years of related machining experience, with hands-on HAAS CNC mill & lathe experience and Mastercam 2D & 3D programming skills. Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities are essential, along with technical expertise and computer proficiency. Responsibilities:
- Acquire and maintain personal tools – Obtain and maintain personal tooling including calipers, mics, hammer, tap handle, wrenches, drill gauge, and related instruments.
- Identify materials and determine feeds & speeds – Properly identify different material types and correctly determine feeds & speeds for saw and all types of tooling.
- Perform preventative maintenance – Proficiently perform preventative maintenance on all machines and make repairs as needed, including Waterjet and HAAS equipment.
- Set up and operate machining centers – Square up material on machining centers, use edge finders and indicators, perform basic tool build-up/setup, and competently run production machined parts.
- Measure, deburr, and inspect parts – Proficiently measure own parts while running production, monitor cutting tools and change/index as necessary, properly deburr parts, clean and chamfer holes, and perform 1st piece inspections.
- Perform manual equipment programming and tapping operations – Proficiently program manual equipment, determine tap drills, and use both cutting and roll form taps. Sharpen drills and determine when cutting tools are dull or need regrind.
- Apply offsets and set up workholding – Use wear offsets/cutter compensation to hold tolerances, pick up blocks & set offsets, and perform proper setup of vises & angle plates with solid workholding technique.
- Program in Mastercam – Create and manage tools in Mastercam, develop 2D programs (facing, holes, contours), advance to 3D programming, and post, send, and receive programs to/from machines via ENETDNC.
- Produce tooling components – Confidently produce MTG plates, risers, parallels, heels, and related tooling components to specification.
- Operate FLOW Mach 500 Waterjet – Operate the FLOW Mach 500 Waterjet, monitor operating conditions and adjust meters & gauges for quality of cut, deburr and inspect waterjet parts, and inspect 1st and subsequent pieces for conformance.
- Program waterjet software – Use FlowPath, FlowCut & FlowXpert to translate wireframe and program parts; specify material specs for the cut and fluently prove out programs, set work offsets & heights, and edit at the machine.
- Perform 3D machining and advanced Mastercam programming – Polish 3D part shapes, build roughing & finishing tools, modify or manipulate geometry/CAD for desired toolpaths, and design and machine fixtures for part machining.
- Operate HAAS CNC lathes – Perform basic I.D. & O.D. turning on lathes, set up tools on CNC lathes, operate tool post & turret on ST-30/TL-1, perform hole manufacturing, and install/operate collet chucks.
- Operate 4th and 5th axis equipment – Operate 4th axis platter and 5th axis trunnion, program 4th & 5th axis in Mastercam, and efficiently execute programs on Fanuc 31i-MB controller.
- Operate and maintain Viper Bridge Mill – Perform preventative maintenance on the Viper Bridge Mill, operate the machine, perform efficient setups, and utilize and program the Renishaw probe and tool setter.
- Operate Wire EDM – Operate Mitsubishi Wire EDM, perform all preventative maintenance, manage auto threader maintenance & operation, program the machine, transfer/edit files, and monitor cut conditions.
- Train employees and support department leadership – Train new employees, efficiently train waterjet operators in all aspects of the job & programming, oversee activity and workforce in the manager’s absence, and troubleshoot & perform advanced repairs on all department equipment.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED; vocational training preferred (STEM Program, Career Center, or Technical Trades)
- Two or more years of related machining experience required
- HAAS CNC mill & lathe experience required
- Mastercam 2D & 3D programming experience required
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Technical expertise and computer proficiency
- Ability to multi-task (e.g., running multiple machines simultaneously)
- Very active physical position requiring standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the shift
- Ability to frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with fumes, airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, moving mechanical parts, industrial equipment, vibration, and elevated noise levels
- No travel required
