Technique is looking for a Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) to join our Quality team at our Jackson, Michigan facility. This position is responsible for ensuring welded products meet customer specifications, applicable codes, and internal quality standards. The role includes performing visual weld inspections in accordance with AWS standards, reviewing weld procedures and welder qualifications, conducting first article, in-process, and final acceptance inspections, and supporting audits, root cause investigations, and continuous improvement across prototype and production manufacturing. Technique is ITAR registered and supports aerospace and defense manufacturing with AS9100 quality standards and full material traceability.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in aerospace welding requirements and experience working within AS9100 or similarly regulated manufacturing environments. A current AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) certification and a minimum of 5 years of weld inspection experience in a manufacturing environment are required, along with strong knowledge of GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), resistance welding, and robotic welding processes, the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, and GD&T, and experience using precision inspection equipment.
Responsibilities:
Perform visual weld inspections – Perform visual weld inspections in accordance with AWS standards, customer specifications, and engineering drawings.
Verify weld quality – Verify weld quality throughout prototype and production manufacturing.
Ensure compliance – Ensure compliance with AWS D1.1, AWS D17.1 (preferred), customer specifications, and internal procedures.
Review weld procedures – Review weld procedures (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
Conduct inspections – Conduct first article inspections, in-process inspections, and final acceptance inspections.
Document inspection results – Document inspection results and maintain accurate quality records.
Support continuous improvement – Support root cause investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Collaborate across teams – Work closely with Welding Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Production, and Quality teams to resolve weld-related issues.
Assist with audits – Assist with customer audits, internal audits, and supplier quality activities.
Verify calibration status – Verify calibration status of inspection equipment and maintain compliance with quality system requirements.
Support customer documentation – Support PPAP, FAIR, and customer documentation as required.
Requirements:
Current AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) certification
Minimum 5 years of weld inspection experience in a manufacturing environment
Strong knowledge of GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), Resistance Welding, and robotic welding processes
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, and GD&T
Experience using precision inspection equipment including calipers, micrometers, gauges, and height gauges
Excellent documentation and communication skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office
High attention to detail and commitment to quality
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Ability to work independently while collaborating across departments
Professional communication skills with both internal teams and customers
A continuous improvement mindset with a passion for manufacturing excellence
Aerospace manufacturing experience preferred
Experience working in an AS9100 and/or NADCAP environment preferred
Familiarity with AWS D17.1, AWS D1.1, ISO 9001, and aerospace quality requirements preferred
Experience with First Article Inspection Reports (FAIR) to AS9102 preferred
Non-Destructive Testing (VT, PT, MT, UT) certifications are a plus
Knowledge of metallurgy, weld discontinuities, and failure analysis preferred
Experience supporting customer audits from aerospace or defense OEMs preferred
