Robotic Welding Technician

Technique is looking for a Robotic Welding Technician to join our team at our Jackson, Michigan facility. This position reports to the Prototype Welding Manager. This role involves the progressive use of MIG/TIG welding equipment to weld both stainless steel and carbon steel in accordance with job and customer demand. The Robotic Welding Technician will support the quality assurance team with part layouts and inspections, assist in the design, development, and implementation of production fixturing, and operate and recover welding robots for all phases of production.

The ideal candidate brings 2 or more years of welding experience in an industrial setting, with a strong foundation in GTAW/GMAW welding, blueprint reading, and GD&T. Experience operating and troubleshooting robotic welders—especially Motoman, Panasonic, or Fanuc systems—is highly valued, along with the ability to interpret CMM reports, adjust robot parameters, and perform preventive maintenance. Offline programming experience and familiarity with PLC screens and weld fixture design are a plus.

Responsibilities:
  • Set up and weld – Set up the welder and weld basic GTAW & GMAW mild steel joints, including reading and applying basic weld symbols.
  • Identify materials and manage consumables – Distinguish different material types and change over wire and gas for regular operations.
  • Operate projection welder – Set up and troubleshoot projection welder and change settings accordingly.
  • Perform 1st piece table layouts – Perform 1st piece table layouts and apply basic GD&T understanding to evaluate results.
  • Troubleshoot prototype welding builds – Identify and resolve build issues during prototype welding, processing all job folders and completing documentation required by quality.
  • Assemble and verify prototype fixtures – Assemble all prototype fixtures and check them before quality approval.
  • Load and run robot welder – Load and run robot welder in auto and make needed repairs on assemblies after robot for BSR functions.
  • Interpret and troubleshoot CMM reports – Read and understand CMM reports and troubleshoot builds from CMM data to improve processes and achieve a good first piece.
  • Recover robot from fault – Recover robot from fault, restart programs, adjust points and parameters, and change programs from the PLC screen.
  • Change out fixtures – Change out welding fixtures and understand fixture locations and return processes.
  • Advanced robotic welder operation – Run and make advanced adjustments on robotic welders, including harmonizing, timing, and setting up new fixtures; troubleshoot independently or with assistance from Miller if required.
  • Offline programming – Utilize offline programming software to prepare jobs.
  • Support quality assurance – Support the quality assurance team with part layouts and inspections using knowledge of GD&T and print reading.
  • Design and implement production fixturing – Assist in the design, development, and implementation of production fixturing.
  • Perform robotic welder maintenance – Maintain robotic welding equipment per a weekly preventive maintenance schedule, including replacing torches, liners, and wire drive systems; greasing robotic joints and external axis; replacing batteries; and maintaining air cleaner units, collectors, and filters.
  • Work safely and follow procedures – Adhere to all company and department-specific safety procedures; this is an essential function of this position.

Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED; vocational training (STEM Program, Career Center, or Technical Trades) preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of welding experience in an industrial setting
  • Basic understanding of GD&T and print reading
  • Basic understanding of hand tools and layout/inspection tools
  • Robotic welding experience preferred; proficiency with Motoman, Panasonic, or Fanuc systems a plus
  • Ability to perform point touch-ups, adjustments, troubleshooting, PLC programming, and calibration on robotic welders
  • Advanced understanding of GD&T and layout/inspection procedures desired
  • Offline programming experience and familiarity with CAD/SolidWorks and weld fixture design desired
  • Very active physical position requiring standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the shift; must be able to lift and/or move items over 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to fumes, airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, moving mechanical parts, industrial equipment, vibration, and loud noise
  • No travel required

Position Type and Expected Hours:

This is a full-time non-exempt position with a minimum of 40 hours per week. Overtime is required as needed. Days and hours may vary; flexibility in work schedule is an essential function of this position.
