Technique is looking for a 2D Laser Technician to join our team at our Jackson, Michigan facility. This position reports to the 2D Laser Manager in the 2D Laser department. This is a skilled technical role responsible for the operations, programming, and maintenance of 2D flatbed laser cutting equipment, requiring the ability to read blueprints, make fast and accurate decisions relating to equipment and processes, and apply safe work practices as defined by company and department safety procedures.

The ideal candidate has 1–2 years of manufacturing experience and a solid foundation in metal finishing, blueprint reading, and laser machine operation. Experience with tech table modification, preventative maintenance, and software-based cutting path adjustments is a strong plus. Candidates progressing toward a Lead role will bring 3–4 years of 2D laser experience and the ability to train others, write new tech tables, and manage machine assignments.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area – Perform general labor and keep the work area clean, safe, and organized at all times.
  • Evaluate cut quality – Recognize and distinguish between good and bad cut quality to ensure parts meet specifications.
  • Log in and out of jobs using E2 – Use E2 shop management software to accurately log in and out of production jobs.
  • Operate hand grinder and sander – Use hand grinder and sander equipment for metal finishing as required by job specifications.
  • Power up and shut down laser machines – Follow proper startup and shutdown procedures for laser cutting equipment, including lockout/tagout protocol.
  • Load sheets and operate machine processes – Load material sheets into the machine and start/stop machine processes as required.
  • Manage job folders and part storage – Understand and work with job folders and their contents, including material location, in-process data sheets, work-in-process tags, and routers; manage part storage both pre and post process.
  • Load and delete programs – Load and delete machine programs as directed; open software to visualize cutting paths.
  • Read blueprints and perform surface plate layouts – Understand and apply blueprint specifications; perform basic surface plate layouts and shear/trim sheets as needed.
  • Interpret and clear alarms – Interpret, troubleshoot, and clear basic machine alarms to maintain uptime and production flow.
  • Adjust cut quality using manual overrides – Use manual overrides to adjust cut quality; use software to modify cutting paths as needed.
  • Modify, adjust, and document tech tables – Modify, adjust, and document tech tables to achieve and maintain optimal cut conditions.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and optics alignment – Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and conduct optics focus and alignment (tape shot) procedures.
  • Use material rainbow sheet – Use the material rainbow sheet to locate correct sheet stock for jobs.

Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED; vocational training (STEM Program, Career Center, or Technical Trades) preferred
  • 1–2 years of manufacturing experience; advanced manufacturing classes a plus
  • Lead: 3–4 years of experience in 2D lasers
  • Ability to read blueprints and make fast, accurate decisions related to equipment and processes
  • Basic problem solving skills
  • Ability to obtain an industrial truck license
  • Flexibility in work schedule; working overtime is required
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds
  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the shift
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, moving mechanical parts, industrial equipment, vibration, and loud noise
  • No travel required for this position
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States; E-Verify partner employer (U.S. Citizenship, Work Visa, or H1B sponsorship)

Position Type and Expected Hours:

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a minimum of 40 hours per week with overtime as needed. Note: days and hours required may vary. Shift premiums are available.

Shifts include:
  • 1st Shift – Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM
  • 2nd Shift – Monday through Thursday, 3:30 PM to 2:00 AM ($X.XX shift premium per hour)
  • Weekend Days – Friday through Sunday, 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM ($X.XX shift premium per hour)
